#SMALL CITY BIG THINGS

As the smallest city in New Hampshire, and part of a large revitalization effort, Franklin is located at the center of an east-west travel corridor for the Lakes Region and a major north-south route, Interstate 93, connecting Boston to the White Mountains. Each year millions of people pass Franklin on their way to a variety of outdoor recreational activities: boating, fishing, hiking, biking, climbing, paddling, and site-seeing. However, Franklin is only known as an outdoor destination by whitewater enthusiasts.

A proven strategy for driving economic growth is to build on the city’s existing outdoor infrastructure. Franklin — the nearest reliable whitewater to Boston — has a long history with regional whitewater enthusiasts and receives positive media attention with the annual First Day Franklin, hosted by Choose Franklin in collaboration with the Merrimack Valley Paddlers.

This strategy has been implemented several times across the country, where cities or towns have used whitewater kayaking and rafting to drive regional economic growth.

However, as you will see in the months to come it isn’t just about whitewater. Little do the public know about the Winnipesaukee Basin Trails, which consists of interconnection of over 10 biking sites and over 134 miles of trails. Franklin has significant access to multiple high quality trail systems that are free to the public. Our partners at the Greater Franklin HEAL Coalition have already illustrated this with a great resource map.

This is our role in Franklin’s revitalization! Together with you, this City and the many other local businesses we can make a sustaining positive impact!

THE ONE STORY

I received my first job out of college, after I received a strong referral from a high level executive that went whitewater rafting with me. Eight years later, I was definitely “broken in” to corporate life and living what I thought was my only reality. I had a family I cherished and received a substantial promotion at work, in which I was the youngest person in that position by almost a decade.

This was validation for a “good life,” in my mind. I worked hard, kept my nose to the grindstone and proved myself as an asset to the company. However, the consequences of such unconditional dedication were neglect to the other areas of my life that I valued. My priorities were awry. My “success” was a fallacy. It took substantial change in my world to promote growth and the need for action. At the crux of my conundrum was un-fulfillment and lack of happiness with me and my personal life’s direction. I was living by other people’s expectations of me instead of my expectations for myself. At this point growth ensued, pushing me to no longer compromise what I love, my kids, my future & dreams.

My outlet and passion is paddling. It has been since the first time I rafted as a customer. It then adapted as I progressed. First as an extremely novice kayaker, to a raft guide, then on to a kayaker who is “in between swims.” As a New England paddler, I cherished the early education in rolling I received from then Suncook River Canoe & Kayak, as well as, the Merrimack Valley Paddlers, who continue to support local paddlers.

We believe in the concept of flow moments, social and environmental entrepreneurship. We also believe in comparison to states branded as outdoor destinations such as Colorado or North Carolina, New England has far less support, with a plethora of opportunities to get outside.

Millions of visitors come to our forests, mountains and beaches. We at Outdoor New England believe you need to take your fun seriously. Our business’s launch is the first step of a multi-phase approach to support healthy active lifestyles through environmental attachment. We will be working hard to provide the region with new and different outdoor amenities and outdoor educational programs, while uniting those New England companies already doing amazing things.

We want to help you take your fun seriously!

Lets get outside New England!
